Personal Style is attitude, attitude, attitude. It has to come from within. You have to develop things yourself.Iris Apfel
There is something magical about a change of year, and this year in particular with the change of a decade. As we spring into the new and exciting year of 2020, why not wear items that make you feel inspired and empowered?
After all, clothes are our second skin. The way you dress shapes the feelings and emotions you have about yourself. And it is a way of speaking to the world without saying anything.
Let’s think about this for a moment.
Do you realise that you are actually the only person who decides how you show up in the world, how you dress, what you wear, how you wear it, when and why?
Wow, if that isn’t powerful then I don’t know what is!
Changing your external appearance is a way of seeing yourself in a new light, change is what empowers life and opens you up to new possibilities.
It only takes a few tweaks to make a big difference. Here are three things you can do that will give you a bounce in your step as you enter the new decade.
1. Update your hairstyle
It is so easy to fall into a safe routine and stick with the same style for years. But a change in our hairstyle can be so energising and give us a new outlook on life.
I can’t remember the amount of times I have changed my hair, from different styles to colours. I have even had extensions! Each and every time I have felt so different and even my attitude changed.
Sometimes even small tweaks can make us feel like new. For example, changing the way you part your hair, or wearing your hair in a sleek bun.
But never underestimate the impact a new haircut can make. It can make you feel completely different about yourself.
I highly recommend going to a professional hairstylist for a consultation. They will give you style ideas to suit your face shape and lifestyle. Whether you want a completely new look, or a refresh of your current look, they can totally transform you.
2. Simple make-up ‘swaps’
When you were a child, I bet you enjoyed face painting and getting creative! I’m not saying we should mask ourselves with makeup, but to play around and try something different.
So swap your normal lipstick shade to another, swap your matte eyeshadow for a shimmer, you get the idea!
A different lipstick can change a whole outfit, just like a new eye shadow colour or adding some colour on your lashes can too!
If you are not into make-up at all, then be sure you invest in good skin care or perhaps experiment wearing a little makeup for a more natural look. Sometimes it is even the smallest of changes, like curling your eyelashes and wearing some lip gloss can give you a different look.
Practice trying different things. Take some pictures to see what looks good and what doesn’t. Remember, it’s meant to be fun!
3. Add a statement accessory
Whenever you are feeling tired of your day to day outfits, there is no need to get rid of everything and start from scratch.
All you need is a few accessories up your sleeve.
I always suggest to my clients that they add at least one statement item to an outfit. It will take your outfit from ‘okay’ to super stylish!
For example, a nice patterned scarf with white t-shirt and jeans look.
I love to use silk scarves to accessorise, try tying one around your neck with a white t-shirt, or tying them to the handle of a handbag, or use them in your hair.
You could wear some statement earrings with an all black outfit. Or even add a funky bag to a more classic-tailored look to add some flavor to your style personality. Please don’t overthink what matches and works – grab what calls you in that moment.
So, there you have it 3 ways to enter the new decade with a new look. Investing time and energy into your style shows you care about yourself. And it doesn’t need to be drastic. Remember, micro habits!
